Before I hit the sack, I would like to say a few things off from my head...
I really pitied Edwin because simply he is like an indispensable SC that could be thrown to any deployment that needed a fix...
You see, our team has been working with really minimum man power and on top of that, there are lot of duties, new SOT trainee and of course, people on mc...genuine or not, it is up to you to decide...
Whenever there are shortage of manpower, the SC are just as capable as the regular counterparts and it would be very easy to slot in any capable SC to take the regular post...As long there is a regular and SC, it would be fine...
Normally, police post are manned by regulars because it is only run with only 1 man...Imagine a poor SC running a police post all by himself, it would be very discouraging for him to entertain difficult customers. I know I should not lament about this.
SC is special constabulary meaning NS guys like me. In the eyes of the public, we are just the same as the regulars. Heck! After three months inside the NPC, you will be like the regulars only difference is that you have an SC tag on your name.
Of course, with a month away to ORD, everyone wants to enjoy and not to create trouble like making it hot in the news. It is just to appreciate that we are doing the very same thing for an SC pay. A mere sergeant gets only 700+ whereas a regular corporal gets much more than that...
It is not that I'm being calculative or what or to think that I'm a money minded person. National Service is a forceful sacrifice. You weren't taxed for obvious reasons and you weren't obligated to perform above your means to the nation.
You may asked me, then what am I suggesting the SCs do?
Well, 1) SCs shouldn't do NPP duties. 2) SCs should partner the regulars at all times. 3) Regulars are supposed to come and help SCs if we met difficulties at work. 4) Regulars should not shirk their responsibilities and leave it to the SCs. 5) SCs are not Regulars.
It may be hard to draw the line to meet the needs of us, the SCs and also what the Regulars are expecting of us.
Sooner or later, when I get a new rank, it means more responsibilities. Not only I do fast response cars, I would be multi-task and multi-deployed to the whims of regulars. Abusive? Nah, more like fully-utilize SC to the max.
I saw a part of the questionare of how govt. handles shortages of manpower in civil service. It is to recruit more NS people like me to meet the demand. Cheap, reliable and efficient. Cheap as it is obvious. Reliable, you are matured enough to think and learn fast. Efficient, you know how to react to situation without any or little guidance.
I want to make it clear that welfare of an SC shouldn't be neglected. I didn't mean that mistreat me or what. I want it to be more concern that we are only an SC afterall. Responsibilities of the regulars do not rest on our shoulders. If we can't perform, they can't blame us. We didn't sign on the dotted line.
Please, spare the SCs all the trouble. Save us. Don't treat us like a regulars.
